BarryGruff Presents #14: No Monster Club, The Dead Beat + Be Curious, Kid :: Saturday, April 20th :: Flanagan’s Bar, Newbridge

BG14

‘BarryGruff Presents’ returns to Flanagan’s Bar for its 14th Newbridge installment on Saturday, April 20th.

Over the course of the past 18 months there’s been some really special nights in Flanagan’s. Saturday night’s show promises to be another top night of live music with No Monster Club & The Dead Beat + Be Curious, Kid.

Dublin’s No Monster Club is without doubt, one of the finest and exciting live acts in Ireland right now. Their rough around the edges blend of surf rock/bubblegum pop/lo-fi indie has been compared to The Strokes, The Velvet Underground, The Unicorns and The Libertines and seen them share the stage with the likes of Ariel Pink, Squarehead, Wavves, Girls Names, Abe Vigoda and HEALTH. No Monster Club went down a storm the last time they were in Newbridge with We Are Losers, and this visit promises to be just as brilliant.

Fellow Dubs The Dead Beat are a four piece indie band, whose sound is firmly rooted in that classic indie sound. Far from being straightforward landfill indie, of which there is already too much; this is melodic indie/alternative rock done with a swagger and poise. The band is currently putting the finishing touches to their new EP, Your 19th Revolution, and take some time out for a first show in Newbridge. Joining them on the bill will be Kildare’s own Be Curious, Kid who has been steadily building a rep for themselves locally with their own indie-rock stylings.

It’s FREE in as usual & the show starts at 9pm. Another night of great music in prospect. [RSVP here]

(Video) No Monster Club – Waking My Idols

Having released their superb album Dublin a few weeks back, No Monster Club have dropped a short and snappy video for ‘Waking My Idols’.

‘Waking My Idols’ encapsulates everything that makes NMC so great, catchy pop melodies, spiky vocals and thrashy reverbed guitars all wrapped up in a little over a one minute bundle of outstanding punky surf rock.

There are very limited copies of Dublin left but check out NMC’s website to see how to pick one up.

No Monster Club | ‘Be My Bone’ + Album News

Longstanding BarryGruff favourites No Monster Club, are set to release a brand new album on March 23rd on 12″ vinyl through CF Records.

Simply titled Dublin, the 10 track album was recorded near Kildare’s Hill Of Allen (or what’s left of it) with Newbridge producer and all round good guy, Poggy Dillon. The first musical taster is ‘Be My Bones’, a quintessential No Monster Club tune, a short burst of utterly infectious sunshine filled fun, with a punky edge. The artwork by Stephen Maurice Graham (above) is ace too. I’m really looking forward to getting a copy of this record. Pre- order it from here.

Check out the video below which captures their antics on tour in Europe last summer and download the track too.

A quick round-up: Barrygruff Presents #2 ‘We Are Losers’ & ‘No Monster Club’

Last month, October 22nd to be precise witnessed the second ‘Barrygruff Presents’ show in Flanagan’s, Newbridge.

It was another huge success on all fronts. The place was packed to the bloody rafters, it was hard to believe it was only a Thursday night. Both performances from No Monster Club and We Are Losers were fantastic, it is not often you get to experience their music stripped back so wonderfully. There are a couple of videos below so you can see and hear for yourself. There’s no definite dates or acts booked for #3 yet but were working on it and when we know, you’ll know.

A massive thank you to Stephen Connelly for all the hard work, Tim Crowley for the sound/recording, Joe Dunne for the videos and to everyone who came down on the night (and anyone I’ve missed out).

Free Gig: We Are Losers & No Monster Club :: Flanagan’s :: Newbridge :: Sept 22nd

The first ‘Barrygruff presents’ was a huge success, so, we decided to do another one.

We are delighted to welcome We Are Losers for their first headline gig in Newbridge. Fresh from storming sets at Leeds Festival and Castlepalooza this summer, We Are Losers bring their glorious lo-fi fuzz pop to Flanagan’s, Newbridge this Thursday, September 22nd.

Beginning as a solo-side project of Super Extra Bonus Party guitarist Gavin Elsted writing and recording songs in his bedroom, We Are Losers were quickly assembled from former bandmates Gary Clarke and Stephen Conlan and Bronwyn Murphy-White of Grand Pocket Orchestra. Their debut double a-side single ‘Sunset Song / Cheerleader’, released on Leeds Indie label ‘Dance to the Radio’ in July secured their position as one of the most exciting emerging acts in Ireland right now.

Accompanying them on the bill is No Monster Club who’s sunshine surf-rock and hyper rough-a-round the edges Strokes-esque sound has already won over legions of fans and seen them compared to the likes of The Strokes, The Velvet Underground and The Libertines. To boot, they are one of the finest live bands in Ireland right now.

Entry is FREE and the show starts at 9pm, Thursday, September 22nd. Join the event on Facebook & there’s more details below.
